Several types of lasers are integrated into industrial material processing systems today. Laser light ranges from ultra-precise UV to long-wavelength far-infrared (far-IR) on the electromagnetic spectrum. Selecting the right laser source for your specific application can take a bit of research and practical sample testing. Below, we provide a baseline guide to help you evaluate your options before sending samples to the lab.

In an earlier blog, titled What Laser Cutting’s Good For, we talked about laser sources powering modern cutting applications. Today, we’ll look at other industrial applications and examine how specific laser wavelengths dictate performance across different materials.

Laser Wavelength Range on the EM Spectrum

Industrial material processing utilizes laser wavelengths spanning from 100 nanometers (nm) to 10,600 nm – more commonly expressed as 10.6 micrometers (μm). You can see where this range falls along the electromagnetic spectrum in the infographic above: ultraviolet (UV) is on the short-wavelength, high-frequency end, while infrared is on the long-wavelength, lower-frequency side. Light visible to the human eye falls between 380 and 760 nm, a band that includes blue and green lasers.

A laser’s wavelength is determined by its active emission – or gain – medium and resonator optics. In fact, the word “laser” is an acronym for “light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation.” For example, a fiber laser uses ytterbium-doped fiber as the gain medium to emit 1064 nm light, gas tubes produce 10.6 µm infrared, and 355 nm UV is typically generated via frequency tripling using non-linear crystals.

How Ultrashort Pulse Lasers Work

Beyond spectral wavelength, pulse duration is a critical parameter. Ultrashort (or ultrafast) lasers deliver energy in brief picosecond or femtosecond bursts, generating massive peak power. These lasers span wavelengths from 1064 nm down to 193 nm, where the absorption mechanism shifts from linear spectral selection to intensity-driven, non-linear multi-photon absorption – making pulse timing the dominant factor in energy transfer.

How Laser Wavelength Affects Beam Precision & Energy

Wavelength sets the physical limit of how small the beam diameter can be. A shorter wavelength diffracts less and thus can be focused into a significantly tighter, more concentrated spot for micro-processing and fine detail. Longer wavelengths yield larger minimum focal spots, distributing energy over a broader area.

Directly linked to this behavior is photon energy. Shorter wavelengths carry higher photon energy, meaning improved absorption and processing efficiency for “difficult” materials – those with high reflectivity, heat sensitivity, and low absorption.

Thermal vs. Cold Processing

Photothermal (Thermal): Longer wavelengths like 1064 nm (Near-IR) and 10.6 µm (Far-IR) heat, melt, and vaporize material. This powers fast, heavy-duty cutting, cleaning, and welding but conducted heat leaves a heat-affected zone (HAZ).
Photochemical (“Cold”): High-energy UV light severs molecular bonds directly rather than heating them, producing clean micro-features with zero thermal damage.

How Power Output Controls Heat

Average Power (Watts): Total energy delivered over time – drives overall processing speed, cycle times, and penetration depth.
Peak Power (Megawatts): Energy packed into an isolated pulse. Ultrashort lasers use massive peak power to process material instantly before heat can conduct – a sure way to achieve cold processing on a substrate.

Wavelength drives beam focus and thermal mechanics, while pulse timing and power output dictate precision. As seen in Table 2 above, short-wavelength laser sources are best for applications that require the utmost precision, near-IR is best for surface preparation, and far-IR might be your top choice for non-metallic substrates. However, keep in mind that material grades and alloys vary, and this table offers a starting point rather than a universal rule.
